Last weekend, the movie Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters worldwide. In less than a week in movie theaters, it has achieved the record for biggest opening weekend of all time. It is also on track to reach a billion dollars internationally faster than any other movie in modern history.
If you’ve been following me a while, you know that I know a lot about pop culture and that my mind is an encyclopedia of random and useless information. You also know that I see a lot of movies. Since I’ve graduated and got a job at Cinemark, I’ve probably seen close to ninety movies, not counting the few hundred others I’ve watched my whole life.
Reading all that, by now, you would expect that I had already seen Avengers: Infinity War. You would expect that I would have written a review, vowed to see it again, or if you were a relative of mine, you would already predict that I would be asking for Avengers for Christmas when it comes out on DVD. By the way, I probably will. 🙂
Yet, I am about to shock you all with the truth. I, Jacob McGowen, HAVE NOT seen Avengers: Infinity War yet.
“But, you work in a theater…You see everything when it comes out,” you might say.
Both of those statements are true, but lately, I’ve discovered something.
FREEDOM IS POSSIBLE.
For so many years, I have seen countless movies, at least four or more a month.
I even could have gone to see Avengers last weekend if I wanted to.
Yet, though I stood at the podium, hearing hints of and actual spoilers from guests and coworkers, I chose not to rush to see Marvel’s latest feature.
That, my friend, is ALL because of Jesus.
So many times, I think I am helpless: to my weaknesses, to my schizophrenia, and to my sin. I think that I cannot stop being an impulsive buyer, that I can’t stop filling my room with “gadgets and gizmos aplenty” while looking out my window, wanting to be like everyone else.
Yet, God has shown me this week, that if I choose to follow Him, trust that His power “will be made perfect in my weakness,” that I can begin to slay the giants in my life, even if for now, that just means waiting to go watch Avengers its second weekend.
Thank you all for reading. Stay tuned for more poems and more blogs.
