A Mere Overpass

overpass

Going to Denver for a weekend is something my family and I always used to do together. Whether it was for a concert, school clothes, doctor’s visit, or whatever, we always enjoyed our trips there.

Back in olden times, however, when we lived in West Monroe, LA, “Duck Dynasty” country, our place to go to was the great city of Dallas where we would see my Aunt Marsha.

On one particular trip sixteen years ago, my mom, Aunt Marsha, my sister Mallory and I were riding along on an overpass in my  Aunt Marsha’s van as we listened to my new NSYNC CD.

Living in rural Louisiana, my family and I did not get to come to Dallas or anywhere like it very often. So, I had no idea that the bridge we were on was called an overpass. Like in many cities, construction of bridges was and is very common in Dallas. I even recall riding along in the car and peering out at unfinished bridges from my window.

While we were riding along on this particular overpass, the perception that the overpass was “unfinished” led to some instant and unintelligible anxiety.

“The thing! The thing! The thing!” I shouted from the backseat.

“JAAAKE! WHAT’S WRONG?” shouted my mom as she turned around to see me.

“The thing, the thing, the… bridge! It’s not there!” I replied.

Within a few seconds, as my Aunt Marsha continued to drive and both my eyes and my mother reassured me, the bridge was indeed there. Though I was at a loss for words, we were not headed for a precipice and we were not going to drive off an incomplete overpass and die.

Last night, a new President was elected for our country. While many are thrilled at the news, there are many still who are anxious and angry and even more worried about the future.

I won’t drone on about “him” or “her” and how one or the other is a bad person.

Yet, I will say this.

If we put our faith in people, whether it’s our friends, family members, our bosses, or even the highest members of government, sooner or later, they will fail us and not come through. You want to know why? It’s because they are human.

However, if we put our trust and faith in the One whose loyalty and love for us never fades, whose leadership never falters, then we can be secure,  we can stand on the “Solid Rock,” no matter who is living at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave or in any other court or throne room on Earth.

And while it may seem we can’t see the road ahead, we can buckle our seat belts, and hang on for the ride, as Jesus leads us, each and every step of the way.

Until Next Time,

Jacobo
