A Brother’s Rescue

Once upon a time, there lived two field mice that lived in a field by a river. The field mice were brothers, and although they were brothers, they could not be more different. One brother was strong, and every day went near the river to search for scraps of food. He was swift and quick, and never was seen by the flying hawks.

Meanwhile, his other brother, was fat and lazy. Each and every day, he would lie in the hole in the ground where he and his strong brother lived. All he did was complain, and eat most of the food his brother brought home. The strong brother, however, did not mind because he loved his brother, as fat and smelly as he was.

One day, though, the strong brother had a fight with his lazy brother. He said, “Each and every day, I search for food and I bring food home. You, meanwhile, do nothing!” To this his lazy brother responded with anger, so much so that the strong brother told him to leave the hole, and so he did.

Nearly an hour passed while the strong brother thought about what happened between his brother and him. Right when he thought about reconciling, he heard the cry of a hawk, and instinctively, ran out of the hole.

Much to his surprise, he saw his brother had not made it very far, only to the south entrance to their hole. Yet, he heard the hawk cry and without giving it a second thought, he ran towards his brother, and together as one, they fell deep into their hole, beyond the reach of the claws of the hawk.

When they hit the ground of the hole, the lazy brother asked, “What happened? Why did you save me?”

The strong brother then responded with a smile, “Because, that’s what brothers do.”

And so the two brothers reunited. The lazy brother no longer would be called lazy, and both the brothers were loyal to each other, to their very last breath.

THE END
